How Deadline Digital brings videos to life through a passion for storytelling

In a world of digital noise, creating content that connects is more important than ever.

Deadline Digital, based in Barnsley, knows that great storytelling can make all the difference. By blending journalism with video production, the team helps clients bring their messages to life in ways that leave a lasting impact.

Geoff Fox, a former journalist turned business owner, founded the company back in 2009. At the time, he was working as a digital editor for the Yorkshire Evening Post. He could see that digital media was on the rise but noticed a gap. Newsrooms needed more video content but didn’t have the time or expertise to make it happen.

With two young children at home and a stable job, Geoff took a leap of faith and launched Deadline Digital. “It was a big decision,” he admits, “but I realised PR companies could offer more than press releases. They could tell real stories through video too.”

In the early days, Deadline Digital was a one-man operation. Geoff did it all, from interviewing to filming and editing. He’d spend his days on shoots and his nights editing at home, often working through the night to get jobs done.

“It was tough and, at times, a pretty lonely existence,” he recalls. “But it started to work. Clients kept coming back. I’ve always liked to build strong relationships, going above and beyond wherever I can. That’s what made the difference.”

Today, Deadline Digital is a small team of talented people, many with backgrounds in journalism or film studies. With their roots in storytelling, they know how to put people at ease on camera and find the heart of a story. Geoff takes pride in knowing former staff members go on to work at places like the BBC.

Sharing stories that make a difference

Over the years, Deadline Digital has built a strong niche in healthcare and the public sector. The team has worked with NHS Trusts, universities, local authorities, and more.

Geoff says his passion lies in telling meaningful stories that go beyond selling products.

“Our job is to pull out the key messages our clients want to share,” he explains. “We interview people in a natural, engaging way that doesn’t sound scripted.”

Many of the projects deal with sensitive or emotional topics. One example is ‘Thinking Ahead’, a national video resource for people living with incurable cancer. Commissioned by the West Yorkshire and Harrogate Cancer Alliance, the films explore topics like spirituality, exercise, and planning for the future.

Another is a film made for the Leeds and York NHS Partnership Trust. It follows the story of a young person navigating both an eating disorder and gender transition. The final film was honest and powerful, earning Deadline Digital a 2025 Lens Award.

“It’s a privilege to share these stories,” Geoff says. “We approach each one with empathy and respect, ensuring people can keep their dignity while talking about some quite sensitive topics. People often tell us they’ve been treated well during the interview. That means a lot.”

The team at Deadline Digital are also experts at turning long interviews into short, impactful videos.

“Someone may speak for 45 minutes,” Geoff says. “Our challenge then is getting that down to two minutes without losing the story. It sounds simple, but it’s a real skill knowing what to leave out. You can always teach someone the technical side,” Geoff adds, “but listening and helping people open up on camera is an innate skill.”

A new home at The Business Village

In late 2024, Deadline Digital moved into a new home at The Business Village in Barnsley. It was a decision initially prompted by practical concerns.

“The car park at our old office was closing for nine months,” Geoff explains. “The alternative meant carrying bulky, expensive camera kit across town which would have been stressful, and unsafe for our team.”

The Business Village turned out to be the perfect solution. With onsite parking, a friendly atmosphere, and even a bistro, it ticked all the right boxes.

“It’s so convenient here,” says Geoff. “The single licence fee is straightforward, with no hidden fees or surprises. Knowing there’s a parking space close to the office at any time of day reduces stress for everyone. Plus, it feels like a nice, professional space.”

Geoff’s also looking ahead to more collaboration with other tenants in the future.

“We’ve already worked with Genius Division, and I’d love to do more with other businesses here. It’s something I’m keen to explore.”

Growing a business that makes a difference

Geoff has always been open to using new technology in the business. He added drone filming back in 2015 and now offers animation, livestreaming, and podcasting. These days, like many in the industry, his eye is on AI.

“AI brings some challenges, but also opportunities,” he says. “It won’t be right for every project. For some, being able to say that a human did the interviewing, editing, and storytelling will be a real plus. But there are places where AI can help us work more efficiently. The key is being open and honest with people about how we use it.”

When it comes to growth, Geoff is clear on his vision.

“My goal is to grow the company in an organic way that feels right. We’ve always found new customers through word of mouth, and I’m happy with that. I want to keep working with great clients, telling stories that matter and make a real difference.”
