New waste regulations for The Business Village

The Government’s new rules (Simpler Recycling: Workplace Recycling in England) mean changes for all Business Village tenants with immediate effect. As a result, rather than having two classes of waste in the skip compound (general waste and paper/cardboard), we now also have a separate food waste container, and a mixed dry recycling container.

The new regulations will have an impact on how you, a tenant of the Business Village, handle your waste products. The responsibility for separating and disposing of your waste lies with yourselves and should form a part of any business’s sustainability agenda.

What’s changedIn addition to General waste and Paper/Cardboard, you must now separate Food Waste (no packaging) and Mixed Dry Recycling (plastic, glass, cans, tins, aerosols, foil, trays)
Where to disposeRecycling bins (see below) are provided in all communal kitchens and the Bistro (Building 1).
General waste will still be collected from your unit.
All other waste (food, mixed dry, cardboard, glass, plastic) must be disposed of in the correct communal bin.

PLEASE NOTE SOME ITEMS ARE NOT CLASSED AS DRY RECYCLABLE WASTE:

Glass

  • ❌ Items not collected include:
  • candles
  • drinking glasses
  • flat glass
  • glass cookware (such as Pyrex)
  • light bulbs and tubes
  • microwave plates
  • mirrors

  • electrical items and batteries
  • general kitchenware like cutlery, pots and pans
  • kettles
  • irons
  • pipes
  • packaging that has contained white spirits, paints, engine oils or antifreeze

All the above should be disposed of accordingly via the usual means provided for each type.

Do Not:

  • Put food or recyclables in your office bin – if found, these bins will not be emptied.
  • Leave cardboard un-flattened or expect cleaners to remove it. It is your responsibility to remove and dispose of in the skip compound
  • Put “compostable” or “biodegradable” packaging in food bins – it is not accepted.
  • Dump furniture, pallets, or large items in the skip compound – you must dispose of these off-site at your own cost.

🔋 Other Recycling

  • Batteries & Printer Cartridges – Building 1 Reception.

⚠ Enforcement

  • CCTV is in operation at the skip compound.
  • Any tenant not following these rules may incur disposal charges, which will be recharged to their company.
